Meet the Team !

Zhihao Ling

Ling is from Shanghai, China. He completed his BSc Chemistry at the University of Liverpool in 2023. Their BSc dissertation was about the sustainability in organic synthesis in the teaching lab under the supervision of Dr Gina Washbourn and Dr Catherine Cropper. Then, he completed his MSc Chemistry by Research in 2024 under the supervision of Dr Matthias Baud, and the project was to synthesize and assess possible small molecule chaperones for multiple sulfatase deficiency. He then took a short placement under the supervision of Dr George Williams to research a functional organic material based on indigo-type photoswitches. His PhD is focusing on synthesis of Hemi-indigo and novel types of photoswitches under the supervision of Dr George Williams. Outside of the lab Ling likes photography and travel.

Alex Buchanan

Alex is from Thame, Oxfordshire and completed his integrated MChem at the University of Southampton in 2024. In his 4th year, he completed a research project in Professor Gill Reid’s group focusing on synthesising phosphinate ester functionalised macrocycles for group 13 metal fluoride chelation. Alex joined the Williams research group in September 2024, with his research focusing on photoswitches for incorporation into mechanically interlocked polymers. Outside of the lab, his hobbies include a love for (amateur) baking, climbing, football and reading.

Becky Kerridge

Becky is from Ledbury, Herefordshire, and completed her Integrated MSc in Chemistry at the University of Birmingham in 2024. In her third year, she undertook an industrial placement in the medicinal chemistry department at Sygnature Discovery, a Contract Research Organisation (CRO) based in Nottingham. During her fourth year at Birmingham, she completed a research project in Dr. Timothy Barendt’s group, focusing on synthesizing Perylene Diimide (PDI) based macrocycles. Becky started in the Williams group in September 2024, with her research focusing on photoswitchable antimicrobials for wound infections. Her hobbies outside of the lab include hockey, climbing and painting.

Anne Aarvik

Anne Aarvik completed her BSc in Biological Chemistry at the University of Stavanger (UiS) in 2022, working on pancreatic cancer metabolism for her final project. She went on to do a MSc in Molecular Medicine at the Norwegian University of Science and Technology (NTNU) finishing her degree in May 2024. She spent the last year of her MSc researching organoids as a potential model for studying pancreatic cancer under supervisors Professor Duan Chen and Chun-Mei Zhao, PhD. In September 2024 she moved from Norway to England to do an integrated PhD in biomedical science at the University of Southampton. She is currently working on a research project focusing on the development of hydrogel structures to improve pancreatic cancer chemotherapy under supervisors Dr George Williams, Dr Nicole Prior, and Dr Nick Evans.

Matthew Russell

Matt is from Purley, Croydon and completed his integrated master’s in chemistry at the University of Southampton in 2025. In his 3rd year, he completed a summer Internship in Dr Matthias Baud’s lab, where he investigated molecular chaperones that reinstated function to p53 with the mutated Y220C codon. He followed up on this research in the Baud group as part of his Master’s, synthesising indole derivatives. Matt then started his PhD in 2025 with the Williams group, currently focusing on the synthesis and integration of hexaarylbiimidazoles (HABIs) into functional materials. Outside of the lab, Matt is currently on Team GB for Roundnet and is an avid Arsenal fan.

Mariko Cook

Mariko Cook completed her MChem at the University of Southampton with her final project under the supervision of Prof. Eugen Stulz and Dr Chloe Howells. Her research explored the potential of ionic liquids as sustainable storage and reaction media for nucleoside phosphoramidites. Alongside her studies, Mariko joined the team at SouthWestSensor Ltd.. There she worked as a Research Assistant and later Graduate Chemist in the development of microfluidic sensor devices for the continuous monitoring of phosphate, nitrate, and ammonium levels in water. In 2025, she started in the Williams group for her PhD. Her research focuses on developing hydrogel-based chemosensors for the detection of metal ion contamination in seawater.
